History of Humberside Airport

As one would expect, Humberside began as a RAF airport during World War II. It was then known as RAF Kirmington. It opened in 1941. RAF 166 Squadron operated from the airport until 1945.

After the war, the airport was abandoned by the RAF and became farmland for a few years. However, by 1960 a few small civil carriers had begun to use the old airstrip so it was reconsidered as a possible community airport. In 1969 the Council bought the farmland and decided to make it a civil airport.

Still known as Kirmington Airport, it opened for public use in 1974 with a passenger building having been constructed. Shortly thereafter, when Humberside County was formed, the name changed to Humberside Airport. The first scheduled flight out of the newly-named airport was to Amsterdam in 1975.

As passenger interest increased, the airport added a restaurant to their facilities in 1983. More improvements were added in 1992 with the extension of the runway and in 1996 with passenger lounges and check-in facility improvements.

Humberside Airport became a private limited company in 1987. New leadership came in 1999 when Manchester Airport plc took control of Humberside Airport shares.
